If you choose not to link, Word will embed the PDF into the Word document. If the Word doc cannot find the PDF file, it cannot open and display it. Because of this, you will always need to keep a copy of the PDF in the same location where you linked it. The downside? The PDF is not embedded in the actual Word document.
